Procedure Instructions

Scheduling an Appointment

We will schedule your appointment as promptly as possible. If you are experiencing pain or an emergency situation, every attempt will be made to see you the day you call.

We strive to schedule appointments that are convenient to your schedule. We respect your time and make every effort to see you on time. Due to the fact that we provide surgical services, various circumstances may lengthen the time allocated for a procedure. Emergency cases can also arise and cause delays. We appreciate your understanding and patience.

So that we can maintain our schedule to accommodate all of our patients, we ask that you arrive 10-15 minutes prior to your appointment to complete all necessary paperwork. In addition, under the Patient Forms section of our website, you can print and complete the necessary forms prior to your visit. Just bring your completed forms with you.

If you are unable to keep an appointment, we ask that you kindly provide us with at least 24 hours notice. This courtesy on your part will make it possible to give your appointment to another patient.

  • Wear as little make-up as possible, and no dark nail polish.

Bring a trusted companion to drive you to your appointment.

An adult with a valid driver’s license must bring you to and from your surgical appointment.

  • You cannot drive or operate any machinery for at least 24 hours after surgery.

prescription

Prescription medication

  • We will be sending prescriptions to your pharmacy the day of your consult for use after your procedure. Please pick them up when you are notified they are ready and hold on to them until your surgery date.
  • If you are being prescribed an antibiotic to take before surgery, start that right away.

After Your Procedure

To the patient's caretaker, please do NOT allow the patient to sleep until you complete the following:

  1. As soon as you get home, take the gauze out and take your medication (800 mg or 2 pills of Motrin/IBU). Take this every 6 hours.
    • If your dosage is lower (600 mg), then take 1 pill every 6 hours.
  2. It is important to eat something substantial such as oatmeal, eggs, cream of wheat, mashed potatoes, pasta, etc.
    • Avoid crunchy foods such as nuts, popcorn, and chips for 2-3 weeks. If you are diabetic, please maintain your normal caloric intake.
  3. After eating and taking medication, replace the gauze directly on the surgical site. The patient should bite on the gauze with moderate pressure. Change the gauze every 30 minutes until active bleeding is no longer visible.
  4. Keep ice on your face for 24 hours to help minimize the swelling. Swelling should decrease around 5 or 6 days post-surgery.

Medication Notes

  • These suggestions vary based on the medication prescribed:
  • If needed take 1 Norco (Hydrocodone) OR 1 Ultram (Tramadol) OR Oxycodone with food.
  • If you feel like Motrin is staying on top of the pain, you do not need to take stronger medication — this is optional.
  • You may also take Tylenol between Motrin doses if needed. You CANNOT have Tylenol and Norco together — it must be one or the other.

Other Helpful Notes

  • Wait about 6 hours after surgery to have any dairy products as that may cause an upset stomach.
  • In the event of an upset stomach or vomiting, please utilize prescribed anti-nausea medication as directed on the bottle.
  • Straws and smoking are NOT recommended for 1 week after surgery to avoid a dry socket.
  • If pain increases 3-4 days out from surgery, you may be getting a dry socket. Call our office for further assistance.

1 Week Post Procedure

mouth rinse

Stop using prescription mouth rinse — it may cause your teeth to stain.

irrigation

Irrigate the LOWER extraction sites using the provided syringe filled with warm salt water. Do this 2 times daily. Do NOT exceed 1 week of irrigating as this will prevent final healing of the soft tissue. Do NOT irrigate the upper sites with the syringe.

infection

It is unlikely, but an infection can occur up to 6 weeks after surgery. If you notice a return of swelling or pain during this time of healing, please call our office so we can check the area and treat if needed. There will be no additional charges for such treatment.

straw

You are no longer at risk for a dry socket, so you may start using straws again.
